The costume parties are also held for popular science fiction as well as fantasy events. In the United States, it is also common to have fancy dress party in conjunction with the movie openings and book release of popular movies and story books. For example, the Star Trek movie, Star Wars, Harry Potter and also Alice in Wonderland along with many others. With the influenced from the Hollywood stars, it is not a surprise to see the increasing popularity of the fancy dress party. On the other hand, in Great Britain, the fancy dress party originate from the masked ball back in the 18th century period. Amongst the general population, costume parties also occurred with increasing frequency from the late 1940's onward, although for the most part the costumes were simple affairs until the mid 70's. Fancy dress parties are very popular throughout the whole year in the United Kingdom. Bridget Jones features the popular and classic theme "Tarts and Vicars". Fancy dress parties are also one of the favourite events among the British Royal Family. Prince William celebrated his 21st birthday with the fancy dress party with an "Out of Africa" theme while Princess Beatrice chose an 1888 themed party for her 18th birthday. Freddie and Gabriella Windsor celebrated a joint birthday fancy dress party with a pre-French Revolution courtly theme. On one incident that almost cost an embarrassment to the British royal family was when Prince Harry infamously wore an Afrika Corps uniform with a Nazi armband. He wore it when he went to a "Colonials and Natives" themed costume party in January 2005. There was a large international outcry after the Sunday tabloid News of the World published a photo of him in the costume. Therefore, one must also be sensitive and considered the feelings of others when choosing for the right fancy dress. In Asia, it is rare and not common for people to be talking about organizing the fancy dress party. One of the reason is probably the difference in perspective towards wearing costumes that could look silly. However, we are slowly seeing a trend towards the same direction as well. This is probably due to the influence from the Western region. There is one country in Asia, which is Japan that is known for the fancy dress party as well. However, the party only revolves around the costumes and fancy dress of popular manga and anime. It is more commonly known as cosplay in Japan instead of fancy dress or costume party.
