We all are quite familiar with medieval costumes since we have come across them in various movies, fairly tales and in plays. Clothing is just not considered as clothing but it reflects the social, economic and even moral implications of that era.

Medieval costumes came into existence after the fall of the Western Roman Empire in AD 476. The styles of the medieval costumes varied from region to region and as per the social status of the particular person. The affluent class of people wore clothes that reflected their high status in the society whereas peasants wore clothes, as per their budgets. Medieval costume patterns differed from place to place and each country had their own distinctive ways of dressing. The most common raw material for medieval clothing was wool and the quality of wool varied on the breed of sheep and the location where it was raised. Medieval era also saw the invention of the spinning wheel and the fulling mill, which mechanically beat, shrank and softened the wool cloth.

During the early medieval period, the difference in male and female costumes was not very pronounced, as both wore a long tunic called a "bliaut," belted at the waist, and a cloak. The only difference was that men wore beards and the length of their dress sometimes crept up to the knee. However both male and female wore skirts. It was only after the development of armor that a strong differentiation began to manifest itself. As the medieval era progressed, the costumes began to change considerably. Women's clothing changed superficially with waistlines and necklines moving up and down and sleeves alternated between loose and tight-fitting.

Women generally dressed in two layers, an overdress and an under dress. Headgear is the area of fashion, where medieval women's clothing had its true distinctiveness. Medieval costumes for men generally comprise of breeches, trousers and tunic. The styles of the medieval costumes varied from region to region and as per the social status of the particular person. Medieval costumes are the best way to understand the life-style, culture and fashion of that period, since they rightly depict the true picture of that society.
